GPU cloud free credits 2026: what $30-$300 can actually test

A cloud credit answers one narrow question: who pays the bill until the balance or time window runs out? It does not guarantee that the account can provision a GPU, that the requested region has capacity, or that the provider will approve the required quota.

That is why the biggest headline offer is not automatically the best GPU trial. In the public offers checked on August 16, Modal’s recurring $30 is the clearest self-serve GPU test budget because its Starter plan publishes both the credit and GPU rates. Google Cloud advertises ten times that amount, but a non-billable Free Trial account cannot add GPUs to VM instances until it is upgraded. AWS, Azure, and Oracle offer broader cloud credits, yet the GPU path still depends on account access, quota, shape, and region.

The short answer

  • Best direct GPU test credit: Modal. Starter includes $30 of free compute credit every month. The same pricing page lists each GPU rate, so a test budget can be calculated before deployment.
  • Largest public headline credit: Oracle and Google at $300 each. Neither amount is a hardware reservation. Google’s trial account explicitly blocks GPU VMs until upgrade. Oracle says the balance applies to eligible OCI services, but its offer does not promise a particular GPU shape or region.
  • Best broad-cloud proof-of-concept credit: depends on the stack. AWS offers up to $200 over a six-month Free-plan window; Azure offers $200 for 30 days. These can make more sense when the test includes networking, storage, identity, and monitoring, not only GPU runtime.
  • Safest operating rule: prove allocation before porting the workload. Check the plan, GPU quota, exact machine shape, region, and what happens when the credit ends.

A yes or potentially means only that the published credit terms do not conclusively prevent GPU spend at the relevant account stage. It is not evidence that an H100 or another named accelerator is in stock. Credits are a billing control; deployable capacity is an operations control.

How much Modal GPU time does $30 buy?

Modal is the useful worked example because its pricing page exposes both sides of the calculation. On August 16, 2026, Starter still included $30 per month and the page listed 11 GPU task rates from T4 through B300.

The calculation is:

estimated GPU hours = $30 / (published per-second GPU rate x 3,600)

The estimates below assume the entire $30 is available for one GPU and ignore CPU, memory, volume, network, and other charges. They also assume the container is billable only for the stated GPU duration. These are ceilings for planning, not promises about runtime, throughput, cold starts, or capacity. The useful lesson is not that a T4 is always the economical choice or a B300 is wasteful. GPU selection starts with memory, supported precision, model format, and the job’s actual bottleneck. The table only shows how much billable GPU time fits inside one recurring credit. For a quick deployment smoke test, four hours can be enough to prove image build, model load, one request path, logging, and teardown. It is usually not enough for an open-ended tuning session. A lower-cost GPU can buy more iteration time, but only if the workload fits and the software path supports it.

CPU and memory are the easiest costs to forget. Modal lists those resources separately, so the GPU-only ceiling will overstate actual runtime whenever the container also reserves meaningful CPU or RAM. Keeping a worker warm also spends continuously. The four gates between a credit and a working GPU

A useful trial plan checks four gates in order. Skipping ahead is how teams spend engineering time on a credit they cannot use.

1. Billing eligibility

Confirm that the credit applies to the product being tested. Azure excludes third-party Marketplace purchases from its $200 first-month credit. Oracle limits its $300 to eligible OCI services. AWS distinguishes between Free and Paid account plans, and says remaining Free Tier credits can apply to eligible bills after an upgrade. None of those statements proves that every GPU-related charge is covered.

2. Account access

Google makes this gate explicit. Its Free Trial provides $300 for 90 days, but the non-billable trial account cannot add GPUs to VMs or request quota increases. Upgrading unlocks restricted services and preserves unused Welcome credit until the original 90-day expiry, but billing is then enabled for costs beyond remaining credit or for products outside the trial.

AWS has a similar plan distinction with different wording. The Free plan is designed to avoid surprise charges and blocks a subset of offerings that could rapidly consume credits or require hardware purchases. Upgrading removes those plan limitations, but it also creates normal pay-as-you-go exposure once credits no longer cover eligible usage.

3. Quota and capacity

A balance cannot override a zero quota or an unavailable machine family. Check the exact accelerator, GPU count, VM or container shape, and region before changing application code. If a quota request or account review is required, treat approval as a prerequisite rather than an administrative detail to solve after migration.

4. End-of-credit behavior

The failure mode differs by provider. Google’s non-upgraded Free Trial account closes when the 90-day window or $300 is exhausted, stopping resources and beginning a recovery window. AWS says its Free plan ends after six months or when credits are exhausted; upgrading retains qualifying unused credits until their separate expiry. Oracle says paid trial resources can be reclaimed after the trial if the account is not upgraded. Azure’s unused first-month credit disappears after 30 days.

A production workload should not discover these rules by stopping unexpectedly. Record the credit expiry, set budget alerts where available, and define whether the resource must be stopped, deleted, or scaled to zero to end billing.

A bounded credit test that produces a decision

A good trial answers one deployment question. Use a fixed runbook:

  1. Choose the smallest valid GPU class. Start with required VRAM and software support, then compare cost.
  2. Confirm the four gates. Record credit eligibility, account plan, quota, region, and capacity before porting.
  3. Write a pass condition. For example: the image builds, the model reaches ready state, ten representative requests complete, logs are captured, and the resource is destroyed.
  4. Set dollar and time boundaries. Reserve part of the credit for failed image pulls, initialization, CPU, memory, and storage instead of assigning the full balance to GPU runtime.
  5. Measure workload behavior. Capture cold start, model-load time, queueing, request latency, errors, and billable duration. Published credit arithmetic is not a benchmark.
  6. Test teardown. Confirm that the action you call “stop” actually ends the compute charge and identify any storage or IP resources that remain billable.

Verdict

For a bounded self-serve GPU deployment test, Modal’s recurring $30 Starter credit remains the most transparent public offer in this comparison. The amount is smaller than the general-cloud trials, but the provider publishes the GPU rates needed to turn the balance into a realistic time budget. Depending on the accelerator, the GPU-only ceiling runs from about 50.81 T4 hours to 4.23 B300 hours at rates checked August 16, 2026.

Google’s $300 is not a GPU-VM trial until the billing account is upgraded. AWS, Azure, and Oracle can fund broader infrastructure proofs of concept, but the credit alone does not establish GPU access, quota, or capacity. Verify those controls first, then run a deliberately bounded test.
